Food exports could be contaminated with the banned chemical DEHPh

Taipei, June 2 (CNA) Premier Wu Den-yih issued a directive Thursday for the suspension of all food exports that could be contaminated with the banned chemical DEHP.

In an effort to control the ballooning crisis of DEHP-contaminated food, Wu directed the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to immediately halt overseas shipments of five major categories of food and beverages until it could be verified that the products are free of the toxic plasticizer and awarded with certificates.

The products include sports drinks; juices; tea drinks; fruit jams, jellies and syrups; and supplements in tablet, powder and capsule form.

The premier's directive was the latest action by the government to deal with Taiwan's recently discovered problem of DEHP-tainted clouding agents in food and drink.

Wu also asked the MOEA to work with the Department of Health (DOH) to establish food additive and ingredient manufacturing standards and a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) system.

The MOEA and DOH should also ensure that the businesses in the food sector adopt food traceability measures and voluntarily submit to checks of their food additives, Wu added.

The traceability system will enable manufacturers, importers, exporters and consumers to track the source of a product's ingredients and will provide information on the manufacturing process and the finished product, he said.

He urged the DOH to speed up the recall of plasticizer-contaminated products in order to restore consumer confidence as quickly as possible.

Over the past few days, 21 manufacturers of clouding agents have been identified throughout Taiwan and it was determined that Yu Sheng Chemical Co. and Pin Han Perfumery Co. were the two major suppliers of DEHP-contaminated clouding agents.
