Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, University of Aarhus, and Statens Serum Institut studied more than 35,000 Danish women. According to Reuters Health, they surveyed each subject about their multivitamin use “use around the time of conception–four weeks before and eight weeks after a woman’s last period.”

Virus hepatitis terutama hepatitis B dan C, mempengaruhi satu dari 12 orang di seluruh dunia atau dapat mempengaruhi kehidupan sekitar satu juta orang setiap tahun. Asia Pasifik merupakan daerah dengan tingkat penderita virus hepatitis paling banyak di seluruh dunia.

"Para ahli itu terdiri dari Koalisi Pemberantasan Virus Hepatitis (CEVHAP) di Asia Pasifik dan dibentuk berdasarkan Resolusi Majelis Kesehatan Dunia terhadap Virus Hepatitis (WHA63.R18) pada 21 Mei 2010," kata Pakar Penyakit Hati Fakultas UI dan RSCM, Prof dr Ali Sulaiman, di Jakarta, Jumat. Koalisi tersebut dibentuk guna mengatasi kurangnya kesadaran dan kemauan politik dalam mengatasi masalah dengan virus hepatitis.

Hong Kong researchers ; Liver cancer linked to male sex hormones

HONG KONG — Hong Kong researchers have found that men are more likely to develop liver cancer due to a type of gene which is linked to male sex hormones.

Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong said a study conducted since 2008 found more than 70 percent of patients with liver cancer produced high levels of a gene called cell cycle-related kinase (CCRK).

The study said the gene, one out of more than 17,000 in the human body, is directly controlled and activated by the receptor protein of the male sex hormone, or androgen.

"This study has a potential clinical impact as it depicts the correlation between androgen receptor and liver cancer development," university vice chancellor Joseph Sung and research team leader Mok Hing-yiu said.

"It also provides an explanation on why men have a higher risk of liver cancer than women," they added in a joint statement posted on the university's website.

Researchers examined risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and occupation to explain the gender disparity but none could fully explain the difference.

The study has used mouse models and found either lowering the level or blocking the androgen-receptor-CCRK pathway could significantly reduce the tumor growth rate.

Liver cancer is the third deadliest type of cancer in the world after lung and colon cancer and there is currently no effective treatment.

Men are three times more likely to develop liver cancer than women in Hong Kong, said the study, whereas in certain areas in China and Japan men are seven times more likely to develop it.

Around 40 percent of liver cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage, with that proportion reaching 80 percent in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

In the United States more than 19,000 people are diagnosed annually with liver cancer, and some 17,000 die each year of the disease.

Effects of smoking on prostate cancer progression is biologically plausible including tumor promotion through carcinogens from tobacco smoke, increased plasma levels of testosterone, free or total, an androgen involved in the development and progression of prostate cancer in some smokers, suggested the authors.

“In summary, smoking at the time of diagnosis was associated with substantially increased overall mortality and prostate cancer mortality and recurrence. Ten-year quitters had risks similar to never smokers. These results provide further support that smoking may increase risk of death from prostate cancer”, added the authors.

Prostate cancer is second leading cause of male cancer deaths that executes around 3,300 men, every year and second most common cancer after skin cancer. To fight against the lethal disease, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) has funded a pilot support program for gay men along with their partners as an attempt to help identify their specific prostate cancer support needs.

Coffee reduces liver cancer risk

A study involving ethnic Chinese residents of Singapore found that drinking three or more cups of coffee a day could reduce the risk of liver cancer by 44 per cent, The Straits Times newspaper reported Saturday. The research - begun in 1993 and involving more than 63,000 ethnic Chinese men and women aged 45 to 74, populations considered at higher risk of liver cancer - added to a growing body of evidence contradicting the long-held notion that coffee is bad for the health. Associate professor Koh Woon Puay, who was involved in the study recently published in the US journal Cancer Causes and Control, said the finding meant coffee drinkers could now worry less about liver cancer.

'Coffee has often had to fight its bad image, compared with tea, which is often portrayed very positively,' Koh was quoted as saying. But a study by her team on green tea drinking found that it had delivered no protection against the disease. A 2008 coffee-drinking study found that drinking four or more cups a day might lower the risk of diabetes by 30 per cent.

We can't ignore the need for culling any longer.

HIV/AIDS intervention

It disappoints me that the Economist would follow the fallacious arguments of so many others by framing HIV/AIDS intervention as an issue of "cost-effectiveness." This form of analysis has unfortunately become the dominant tool by which HIV/AIDS intervention is judged today. I am always weary when people put forward the cost-effectiveness argument regarding access to health care because it seems to me a thinly veiled way of saying that some lives are simply not worth saving. How do your really calculate the costs of not intervening any ways? Have you factored in the number of children who are orphaned because of HIV/AIDS? The communities that are utterly decimated by it? What about all the other human costs?

I would argue that we need a significant paradigm shift in the way we think about HIV/AIDS treatment today. If we are to truly overcome HIV/AIDS we, as a global community, must acknowledge that every human being has a right to adequate health care and that no lives are more or less "cost-effective" to save then others. It is time we moved away from the disingenuous, bottom-line, utilitarian analysis of HIV/AIDS treatment and instead focused on the fact that the right to live viz-a-viz adequate health care is a human right.

Police in southern China have detained a factory owner suspected of mixing an industrial chemical used to soften plastics into food additives, state media reported on Friday.

The news comes a day after China, South Korea and the Philippines banned imports of certain food and drink products from Taiwan amid fears of contamination with the same chemical, known as DEHP.

Officers raided the Yuyan Food Co factory in Dongguang City, Guangdong province, on Wednesday, arresting the owner and seizing six tonnes of food additives, Xinhua news agency reported.
